The Substitute - Nicole Lundrigan | Waiting on Wednesday

4:58 PM

I love thrillers, psychological thrillers, mysteries, anything that will keep me guessing and this one sounds twisted! The main character, Warren Botts, has a Ph.D and is taking a break from his lab and decides to teach middle-school (to me that already sounds suspicious). He becomes close to a student, Amanda, and she is found dead in his backyard!!!!! That's already no good and instead of staying put, Botts flees! I'm basically just repeating what the summary says but that's because I don't know much more about this book. I think this will be creepy and will keep me guessing the entire way. Who killed Amanda? Why did Botts run away from the scene? Why did he decide to take a break from his lab? I have so many questions!

Another reason to be excited for this book is it's written by a Canadian author! Yay for Can lit. Some of you may remember that as of last year I've been more conscious of reading more Canadian Literature.

Warren Botts is a disillusioned Ph.D., taking a break from his lab to teach middle-school science. Gentle, soft-spoken, and lonely, he innocently befriends Amanda, one of his students. But one morning, Amanda is found dead in his backyard, and Warren, shocked, flees the scene.

As the small community slowly turns against him, an anonymous narrator, a person of extreme intelligence and emotional detachment, offers insight into events past and present. As the tension builds, we gain an intimate understanding of the power of secrets, illusions, and memories.

Nicole Lundrigan uses her prodigious talent to deliciously creepy effect, producing a finely crafted page-turner and a chilling look into the mind of a psychopath.
